The body language of the smartphone

One morning ,while taking breakfast, I was reading SF Chronicle and I've found an article that impressed me from the first reading I did on the paper version.

The article is called Detecting depression: Phone apps could monitor teen angst By LINDSEY TANNER AP Medical Writer 3 January 2019, 21:10

After I read it again,  back home, on ABC News on line.

I will try –based on this excellent investigation – to walk around the advanced ideas there described.

First of all, I want to highlight this inspiring concept: “digital footprints”

I can suspect that the digital footprint is the deep body language hide in your smartphone.

As human body language never lies, this tech one it doesn`t at all.

The body language hide in your smartphone is a silent shout.

And all these promising investigations mentioned in the SF Chronicle article, present at least three levels for tracking real situation:

  • Apps to describe user behavior
  • Apps to prevent unhealthy situations
  • Apps to improve health

It seems that the two first ones are possible and in the advanced experimental process, and the last one not impossible.

Further, these digital footprints work as strong predictors, a new way to prevention.

Fortunately, it seems we will have new keys to detect what is really happening with your health when you are highly exposed to smartphones

No doubt it is a great idea to obtain prevention from the same screen that may damage

In this way, smartphones may be immediate support for psychological well-being.

There is an important list of possible damages for everybody, but kids and teens are naturally more sensitive to be influenced by their identity and self-esteem. So, I wonder how to grow up with strong emotional health if:

Words, ideas, and images are every day liked or unliked on a public stage

Self-esteem is day after day proved

A feeling of missing out is rounding about you 24/7

Increasing stress is the price to pay if you want to be noticed

Angst is growing up day after day looking for assuring your inclusion

Tech-addiction makes weaker your time in real life (IRL) and even could make confuse the frontier

Erosion in relationships produces a not controlled anxiety to avoid loneliness

And we are thinking about how to contribute to these great ideas. Today our contribution doesn’t come from the devices but is oriented to the same goal: keep kids and teens in psychological well-being and health.

And which is Art & Tech proposal?

  • We experienced that art production strengthens your self-esteem, and that’s because you are a producer.
  • Art let you flow free, with no immediate feedback (or without it at all)
  • Art values the production but also the process. And the process is not only an external event, is mainly inside you. Usually a pleasant process or even one that hurts, but eventually this pain expressed is a healthy path.
  • Art provides a pause. And we are losing pause in this immediate environment. Without pause, the dialogue is not possible, neither a smart answer. No pause means any strategic thinking and action.
  • Art provides focus, and focus train you to define and reach specific goals.
  • Art provides freedom, a condition for innovation
  • Art provides time, and time let life growing up.

But this is not an art website, nor one which proposes that art is the unique solution for all these new problems.  No, that’s not our point of view.

We called this space a lab, and I personally think that the human race is beginning to find the solutions for all these problems that affect kids and every age people. We are sure this is a trans-disciplinary way across science-tech-art-open scope knowledge campus.

This way needs home and school working together but requires the strong contribution of all society, enterprises, and nations.

A cultural construction, but first a community one.

A lab where all knowledge and experiences are necessary.

We invite you to track hopefully these footprints.
