City and the pandemic

The city generates additions and subtractions.  Benefits in the cultural and economic issues, but on the other hand, the population density often brings crime, traffic, and illness. 

Historically, pandemics favored investment in health infrastructure as parks, aqueducts, and sewerage systems, which made cities a little bit healthier places.

Since the environmental emergency, there is a revaluation of nature, air quality, and the desired return to non-polluting means of transport.

Step by step situation would return to normality or would go to a new normality. Mobility will be a problem to solve.  Public transport would be optimized to discourage car use. Probably, it would be fewer projects of highways and parking lots and more parks and green terraces. Walkers, cyclists, and runners would be considered a priority.

Thinking about how cities look like in the future, we will have to consider their organizations, shape, materials, parks, streets, and buildings.

But in times of pandemic, invisible things emerge as inequalities, an underground and depressed economy, and uneven access to public care. In these conditions, infections go fast. Fortunately, at the same time, new ideas and resolutions are coming up.

The pandemic will change the urban organization. The important thing will not be patterns but how the accessibility to housing, education, and health will be.

In this way, we will reduce the inequalities that make part of the world population live in unwanted environmental conditions. 

Therefore the city of the future would not be so different in appearance though a healthier life requires critical changes from now on.

Pandemia y Ciudad

En la ciudad se generan sumas y restas, beneficios en lo cultural y económico, la densidad de población trae, delincuencia, tráfico, y enfermedades. Históricamente las pandemias favorecieron la inversión en infraestructura sanitaria (parques, acueductos y alcantarillados), que hizo de las ciudades lugares un poco más saludables. A partir de una emergencia medio ambiental, hay una revalorización de la naturaleza, de la calidad del aire y de la vuelta a medios de transporte no contaminantes. Lentamente se volverá a la normalidad, la movilidad será un problema a resolver, el transporte público se optimizara para desalentar el uso del automóvil. Se proyectaran menos autopistas y estacionamientos, y si más parques y terrazas verdes. Se dará prioridad a peatones, ciclistas y runners. Pensando como serán las ciudades a futuro, se piensan sus organizaciones, formas, materiales, parques, calles y edificios. Pero en época de crisis (pandemia) aflora lo invisible: desigualdades, economía sumergida y acceso dispar a cuidados. En este ámbito los contagios se aceleran y al mismo tiempo se generan ideas y resoluciones. La pandemia cambiara la organización urbana. Lo importante no serán las formas y si lo serán la accesibilidad a la vivienda, la educación y la sanidad.

De este modo reduciremos las desigualdades que hacen que parte de la población viva en condiciones medio ambientales no deseadas. Por lo tanto la ciudad del futuro no será tan diferente en apariencia...
