DILEMMA
AI, my assistant
AI , my colleague
AI , my therapist
Am I assistant of AI?
A highway without limits
A mirror reflecting countless mirrors
We creating AI, AI creating us
Dilemma can't be avoided
Hopefully we are still responsible

The AI's revolution challenges us for a better world, to assure equitable benefits and respect for fundamental rights
1-Social responsibility
The responsibility for AI use requires effective regulations accepted
and supported by society. It is necessary to be conscious of the benefits and
dangers of its use, promoting citizen participation in public politics
formulation. An indiscriminate use of AI could standardize human creativity.
2-Assure diversity
Considering ethnic, cultural, and generational perspectives from a
multiple and trans disciplinary approximation in all development periods to achieve
emphatic interaction of society with AI systems.
3- Preserve vulnerable groups
Children, active technology users, must receive special attention in the
AI system´s design to guarantee no harmful interactions that impact their
cognitive and emotional development by the link replacement. It must consider
people with different abilities and advanced ages challenges, among other
groups.
4-Bias control design
Like any intelligence, AI also has bias effects. Its decisions turn out
biased by the cultural information it has been trained on. This situation can
result in operational and discriminating risks. Multidisciplinary experts must
work together to identify and mitigate these risks, from design to
implementation.
5-Civil rights guarantee
AI could have a significant impact on civil rights by preventing personal
identification, manipulation, or unequal access to opportunities. The balance
between technological innovation and civil rights preservation is fundamental
in a requirement to achieve socially responsible AI.
6-Mental health control impact
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is employed for the identification and
mitigation of mental health issues. Conversely, excessive exposure, link
substitution, and the consideration of AI as universally comprehensive
knowledge may impact human creative potential.
7-Guarantee human autonomy in decision-making
AI systems should be designed to augment human capabilities rather than
replace them. This necessitates discretionary decision-making with implications
for various domains, including family, education, and legal matters, among
others. Humans, who are inherently beyond reducible statistical and algorithmic
predictions, must play a crucial role in distinguishing the nuances of each
decision area for AI.
- Are you agree with an #AI machine as your #psychological #therapist? - Are you agree with AI making decisions in #justice or #medicine? If not, please share these questions.
-Should learning machines outthink us? or is human judgment indispensable in deciding the most important things in life?
-Is #algorithmic decision-making an #objective way of overcoming human subjectivity?
-Which are the #ethical topics that AI involves?
-Should we, as democratic #citizens, decide what role we want AI to play in our lives?

In a hypothetical situation of a novel or theater piece composed by an AI algorithm, does it make sense to talk about authorship or intellectual rights?
As an
artist, do you try to sync with your audience to make the moment kind of “both
ways”? Do you imagine a machine adjusting / tweaking the execution of a piece
of music to match audience mood? Would that be ethical?

Memories of Passeby 1,
- Memories of Passerby 1
Figura 2.
generativo anteriores, Memories of Passersby I no contiene una base de datos.
Memories of Passersby 1 fue
https://www.artsy.net/artwork/mario-klingemann-memories-of-passersby-i-companion-version-1
2 “That is to say, humankind, a people, are not really going toward a natural but unknown goal, but
they pretend they do so that they progress morally as well as politically. Metamodernism moves for
the sake of moving, attempts in spite of its inevitable failure; it seeks forever for a truth that it never
expects to find”.
quién no.

Art and Artificial Intelligence
Second Part: faces “imagined by” machines
In the previous article we set out to describe a phenomenon that is occurring more and more
frequently in the field of art: the use of artificial intelligence systems for artistic production.
We understand that the development of creative processes where the human and artificial
intelligence are both involved as artists/creators of the work, is framed in a context of
changes in the field of art and aesthetics after the postmodern period. That is why in the
present work we intend to broaden the discussion of the subject taking for the analysis of
this phenomenon the developments of the philosophers Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin
van den Akker (2010) on the concept of metamodernism.
Now, what do the authors refer to with the term methamodernism?
The philosophers Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker (2010; 2017; 2018 see
other citations in Olvieras) use the term metamodernity or metamodernism to describe this
current cultural logic where a permanent oscillation between the paradigms of modernity and
postmodernity is observed.
We will briefly refer to the paradigm of modernity as the one that begins in the
Renaissance era, with the emergence of ideologies based on reason, freedom,
anthropocentrism. Modernity professes a deep trust in reason for the foundation, since it
allows knowing the causes that make everything work. The cult of reason embodies the
modern utopia that professes that through reason it is possible to control nature, leading the
subject to the promise of happiness, progress, the evolution of humanity, in a unidirectional
process towards an ideal future (Oliveras, 2018). In this context, the figure of the artist is
consolidated as a creative subject who signs his works, and professes a deep faith in
creativity and in the new.
Full confidence in reason and the utopia of progress towards a better future are broken after
the fateful scenario left by the Second World War in the middle of the 20th century. Authors
such as Adorno observe that humanity had not reached the finality that reason promised, but
the counterfinality that it promised. Then begins the period of postmodernity, characterized
by the emergence of micro-stories that are opposed to the great story of modernity, giving
rise to dystopias that replace modern utopias. The postmodern will focus on the
deconstruction of these great utopias, seized by a deep melancholy at the loss of the
promise of an ideal future that keeps it in an eternal present (Jeimson, 1984).
temas.
Although for a moment the paradigm of postmodernity seemed to have displaced the
paradigm of modernity, the beginning of the 21st century deviated from the purely
postmodern logic by planting a scenario, a cultural logic, where both paradigms coexist:
metamodernity. The difficulty of interpreting metamodern logic lies precisely in understanding
that mixture that arises in the constant oscillation between two paradigms. For Vermeulen
and Van den Akker, this dynamic can be more appropriately described with the Platonic
concept of methexis, that is, with the participation of things in ideas. Taken up some time
later by the German philosopher Eric Voegelin in the concept of referring to the extent to
which we are both here and there and nowhere. The supposed metaxis of metamodernity
then supposes the permanence of the two paradigms, the constant pendulum oscillation
between the modern desire for meaning and a postmodern doubt about the meaning of
everything (Vermeulen and Van den Akker, 2010), optimism about the future and pessimism
of the constant present. It is neither one nor the other, it is both. The metamodern
necessarily speaks of the hybrid, the permeable.
- The man-AI creator system as an exponent of metamodernity.
From our perspective, this hybridity in the modern and the postmodern that metamodernity
poses offers the appropriate framework to analyze artistic practices where they are involved
as human artists/creators and artificial intelligences (sometimes designed by the human
artists themselves for the joint elaboration of a particular work).
On the one hand, it is possible to think that these forms of creation embody our metamodern
daily life that oscillates between two realities: a virtual world that is governed by algorithmic
and information processing logics, which sometimes exceed human logics (social networks,
reality online, internet); and the tangible, physical, lived reality. Both realities overlap, they
imply each other, they coexist in an “augmented reality”.
In this way, a creative process is enabled that is nourished by the hybrid, with an
involvement of the technologies that we constantly transit. In it, the human offers the artificial
intelligence elements of its tangible reality, just as the artificial intelligence offers the human
elements that arise from the virtual reality that it creates from what the human offers it; and
vice versa. And it is in this pendulum exchange that works such as Memories of Passeby 1.
- Memories of Passerby 1
Memories of Passerby 1 presented by Klingemann in 2018, with the support of the ONKAOS
foundation. It is presented as an installation that consists of a wooden piece of furniture
(70x70x40 cm) that contains an internal computer, and two framed screens of 65” (3840 x
2160) with a personalized frame, where you can see female faces (on the right) in one and
masculine (on the left) in another that are generated from the operation of complex neural
networks.
Figure 2. Image of the work Memories of Passersby 11
Klingemann's work is considered a pioneering work of artificial intelligence, since it is a
completely autonomous machine that uses a system of neural networks (GANs) to generate
1Recovered from:
https://www.artsy.net/artwork/mario-klingemann-memories-of-passersby-i-companion-version-1
an endless stream of artistic portraits of people who do not exist, who do not know each
other. recorded or replayed. Unlike previous generative art installations, Memories of
Passersby I does not contain a database. It is an artificial intelligence brain developed and
trained by Klingemann, who used thousands of portrait images from the 17th to 19th
centuries. Thus, the results displayed on the screen are not random or programmed
combinations of existing images, but unique works of art generated by AI. Memories of
Passersby 1 was conceived to work through the years. A protected and encrypted copy of
the GANs that give rise to the work will be available in the cloud, so that future generations
can enjoy it even if the hardware changes, through emulators.
- Faces “imagined by” machines: a metamodern artistic proposal
From our perspective, we consider that Klingemann's work embodies the metamodern
oscillation between the artistic ideal of modernity -represented in the paintings of the modern
period used by Klingemann to "feed" the machine's algorithm and teach it to draw faces
autonomously- and the postmodern proposal of making use of the artistic styles of the past
to resignify them in the present, and of enabling the particularities from the generation of
faces that do not follow an ideal, a model. The random generation of faces, unaware of a
canon, stabilizes a type of process that in itself can be considered part of a micro-narrative.
We also observe that the artist's proposal that artificial intelligence generate indefinitely
portraits of faces that have never existed and that it is not possible to foresee how they will
be, is in line with the atopic sense that Vermeulen and Van den Akker (2010) grant to the
metamodernity. Unlike modern optimism that moves steadily into the future, and postmodern
pessimism that persists in the present, metamodernity walks with a generated goal, knowing
that there is nowhere to go or a future to tend to, but what is necessary to walk:
“That is to say, humankind, a people, are not really going toward a
natural but unknown goal, but they pretend they do so that they
progress morally as well as politically. Metamodernism moves for the
sake of moving, attempts in spite of its inevitable failure; it seeks
forever for a truth that it never expects to find” (p. 5).
Thus, the work Memories of Passerby 1 returns in a tangible sense the metamodern idea of
going forward, of advancing, without knowing what is expected next. And in this constant
progress, in this possibility that the author raises of generating a work of art in permanent
creation over time, we see reflected this firm will of the artists of the 21st century to make the
finite infinite. We find in this proposal this tendency towards the resignification of the sublime
that is manifested in metamodern logic, from the emergence of a neo-romanticism.
According to Oliveras (2018), the return to the sublime in metamodern aesthetics adopts
multiple variants. One of them, proposed by Vermeulen and Van den Akker (2010), is the
one that refers to the reappropriation of culture through nature, to the fixation of the sublime
in the everyday. In other words, making the everyday, the normal, a piece of furniture with
two screens, seems exceptional.
Final words
Artistic production mediated by artificial intelligence constitutes an incipient and dynamic
field of reflection. In this brief work we have inserted the discussion about these forms of
artistic production in the framework of metamodernity, described by Timotheus Vermeulen
and Robin van den Akker (2010) as a current cultural logic where a permanent oscillation
between the paradigms of modernity is observed and postmodernity.
From the work Memories of Passerby 1 by Mario Klingemann we have been able to identify
as exponents of metamodern logic in the works created with or through artificial intelligence
devices the hybrid creative process proposed by art mediated by artificial intelligence -
where the machine and the human work together as autonomous artists/creators; and the
oscillation between virtual reality and physical reality. Specifically, in Klingemann's work we
have also observed how it makes tangible the metamodern idea of going forward, of
advancing, without knowing what is expected next.
Art mediated by artificial intelligence is undoubtedly an exponent of the metamodernity that
befalls us. And as such, it is ultimately inviting us to rethink the world we live in and act on it.
It is not demanding to problematize the uses we make of technology in our daily lives, the
role that we are giving it in processes previously exclusive to the human species, such as
thinking, creating and producing culture. In this sense, we consider that, just as the
avant-gardes of the 20th century invited us to think about what objects can be considered a
work of art and what cannot (we are reminded here of Duchamp's famous urinal), art
produced with or by means of it proposes a new question: which subject is likely to be
considered an artist, and who is not.
Within the framework of metamodernity we are on the way to new forms of artistic
production, and just as at some point the new technologies in the field of art gave rise to the
development of different styles and aesthetic currents, artificial intelligence today broadens
the horizons of what is possible.

artística empiezan a quedar obsoletos.
- Reflexiones finales
qué es la obra de arte;
quién puede ser considerado un artista y quién no;
qué elementos definen la originalidad de una obra de arte;

Art and Artificial Intelligence
First Part: the man-machine creative system
In
recent years it has been possible to observe in the field of art a phenomenon
that is manifesting itself more and more frequently in artistic productions:
the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for the production of artistic works or
performances.
Now, what do we mean by the term artificial
intelligence?
In
general terms, we can define artificial intelligence as that scientific
discipline that seeks to replicate and develop cognitive processes and human
intelligence through computational systems, as well as solve problems from the
combination of large volumes of data. In the words of McCarthy (2014):
"It is the science and engineering of making
intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related
to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI
does not have to be limited to methods that are biologically observable"
(p. 2).
The
idea that machines can think in a similar way to human beings was introduced to
the scientific community by Alan Turing in 1950. In order to determine if a
computer can prove to have the same intelligence as a person, Turing develops a
test where a human interrogator tries to distinguish between a computer's text
response and that of a human. The methodology and value of the Turing test have
been discussed ever since, laying the foundation for what is known as
artificial intelligence.
The
art world has not remained oblivious to these scientific-technological
developments and has sought to incorporate them into its practices. Since the
1960s, artists have been using computers, code languages and algorithms in
artistic production processes, within the framework of what has been called
generative art.
- The beginnings of artistic
production mediated by machines: generative art
In
general terms, we can say that generative art (Boden and Edmonds, 2009) is one
that implies in its creative process the use of an autonomous or
semi-autonomous system (such as the use of algorithmic systems), which
independently determines characteristics. of the work in production. From this
perspective, computer systems (including artificial intelligence) are
understood as "tools that open up new fields and improve our understanding
of creativity as an indissoluble synthesis between art and science" (Soddu,
C. and Colabella, 1998) .
In
the field of visual arts, a very interesting case is the AARON system created
by Professor Harold Cohen in 1973. This program combines artificial
intelligence software with robotic painting devices to create photographs
autonomously. It has been reverted several times, incorporating in each one the
possibilities of drawing in two and three dimensions, and coloring the
drawings, among others.
In the case of music, algorithmic
composition is a type of creative process linked to generative art. The use of
fractals, statistical models, arbitrary data, among others, have been
translated into musical fragments or sound transformations. In Brian Eno's
compositions, examples of algorithmic or generative music are presented. The
composer takes part in loop-type sounds with different durations, synthesizers,
piano and voices, which are reproduced at different speeds and time intervals,
allowing overlapping and creation of textures. The sounds are thought of as
“seeds” and through the algorithm they are transformed into complex “sound
gardens”.
- The man-machine creative
system
At
present, the use of artificial intelligence in artistic production processes is
becoming more and more frequent, and its development is leading to a
transformation in the nature of the creative process. Let us remember here that
one of the objectives of artistic practices based on AI is for artificial
intelligence devices to acquire their own creative autonomy; that is, that they
become creative agents in themselves, that they make decisions that are not
codified or expected (Rodriguez Ortega, 2020). In other words, without direct
human intervention. So, although it is true that throughout history the link
between art and technological and scientific developments has been
consubstantial with artistic development, the art-artificial intelligence link
poses a different scenario since it confronts the human artist with an
"other ” non-human to which he attributes capacities (such as creativity,
imagination and autonomy), which had originally been considered exclusive to
his own nature (Rodriguez Ortega, 2020).
Inevitably,
the involvement of artificial intelligence systems in the different branches of
art invites us to rethink central concepts linked to the processes of artistic
creation and performance, such as: creation, creativity, authorship,
originality, interpretation and meaning of the work, among others. others. In
relation to the intervention of artificial intelligence in the processes of
artistic creation -the central theme of the work- we consider that one
possibility to start reflecting on this topic is to consider AI as a creative
collaborator of the artist. According to Rodríguez Ortega (2020), seen from
this perspective, the process of artistic creation can be understood as a
“man-machine” continuum, as a hybridization space.
Along
the same lines, Alias Moran (2000) proposes to understand this process as a
"creating system" made up of a machine and a human being, where the
former generates materials (from the multiple combinations of data) that the
human artist then uses. Drive along paths that interest you. What Moran
proposes here is that the use of artificial intelligence as a powerful tool
that offers the possibility of finding original results from a level of
information processing of which the human being is not capable. Artificial
intelligence combines ideas, associates data, and offers material to the human
creator so that he finishes shaping the new piece; an idea similar to that
proposed by generative art. But to the extent that developments in artificial
intelligence advance and these are capable of creating their own works, these
models for conceiving new artistic creations are beginning to become obsolete.
- Final words
In this paper we have set out to describe a phenomenon that is occurring more and more frequently in the field of art: the use of artificial intelligence systems for artistic production. Since the beginning of these modes of artistic production in the 1970s, within the framework of what has been called generative art, we observe that the progressive development of these systems has favored their inclusion at different moments of the creative act, to the point of considering artificial intelligence as a "co-creator" of the work that works together with the human artist. Currently it is possible to observe how the progressive development of artificial intelligence systems is leading to reformulations in the cultural field, inviting us to ask ourselves again about:
what is the work of art;
who can be considered an
artist and who cannot;
what elements define the
originality of a work of art;
which subjects are the
owners of the work of art and -therefore- can make usufruct of its copyright,
among other questions.
We
thus find ourselves before an incipient field of reflection-action that
confronts us with many questions, which we will continue discussing in the
second part of this work. By way of closing, and with the intention of inviting
the reader to ask themselves new questions about this current moment in the
history of art, we conclude the article with a sentence by the researcher
Rodríguez Ortega: “the development of artificial intelligence technologies (AI
) opens (...) a new scenario for contemporary thought. What it means to be a
human being in the 21st century is the question at stake. The convergence of AI
with artistic practices, theoretical-artistic thinking, and aesthetics can
contribute to answering this question from the point of view of reconfiguring
cultural and symbolic productions” (2020, p. 33).

Art & Tech for a Better World begins a new chapter Without changing our mission: “Empower ourselves with concepts and experiences to place technology at our service for a better world”, but focused on a central worldwide topic: Artificial Intelligence (AI) And to that end, we are honored to present two professionals that accepted this challenge from the psychological and data science field
We are aware that our lives from now on will always be
influenced by AI
How we learn, how we work, how we do commerce, how we
cure disease, and so on.
But this is not another step in technology. And why
not? That’s because, unlike in the past when machines could replace physical
human work, AI could replace intelligence at human work.
Even more, the evolution of AI went from classic
machine learning to reinforcement learning.
Even though machines can’t learn by themselves, their performance
depends on the programmer who created them. Thus their judgment/prediction will
be biased towards the programmers’ point of view on the subject.
This jump means a new deep level of prediction of the
physical and psychological aspects of human behavior. In consequence, decisions
about our lives could be made based on the biases of computer developers who
program AI prediction algorithms.
No doubt that in this new landscape, once again, a
reflection on ethics is required.
So, we want to begin a worldwide search for thought and wisdom to contribute to a healthy and ethical AI evolution, always on people’s side.
Art & Tech for a Better World supports every technology progress when we consider it healthy for human life and share questions when could be risky for emotional health
When data
set have not enough or unbalanced information the predictions will be biased to
the case you have more records. If you are trying to train an agent to predict
illness you need a balanced number of cases to avoid even a little percent of
the risk for the patient.
This world
is to seek out help because there's no shame in that and that just means that
that you're human
I think
that society as a whole in a very diverse society and I mean diverse in every way
possible needs to come together to make these decisions around artificial
intelligence
Is the technology
is being created for children people who know children whether in the medical
sense psychological sense learning sense?
Consciousness
implies time to dialogue from different expertise, time to check the effects
over children, and for considering all the questions that you had to consider before
I want to
highlight this visibility of people behind creating AI to be responsible for
what we are doing. If an AI agent is not working so well we need to come back
to responsible people, not only marks and products.

from a new generation of developers who since the original idea and during all
the development process are aware of our digital rights and health.

Is the technology that is being created for children being made by people who truly understand them, whether in the medical, psychological sense, or educational sense?
·
We think that it’s crucial that a diverse society - and I mean #diverse in every way possible comes together to make decisions around artificial intelligence.
Is the technology that is being created for #children being made by people who truly understand them, whether in the #medical, psychological sense, or #educational sense?
·We want to highlight the importance of visibility of the people behind creating AI and the importance of accountability; the responsibility of creating this technology is enormous, and if issues come up with the way an agent is working we need to have a wider #community of diverse #experts to consult, not just those working on the product itself.
